  19.        You must have Version 1.6.0.3 or a later version of the 
  20.        ILLUMINATOR-16 Utility diskettes to install the ILLUMINATOR
  21.        driver (don't forget to reboot your machine after you've
  22.        updated your system with these diskettes!). The Utility
  23.        diskettes should be included with this package, but if they're
  24.        not, contact your Matrox representative and he or she will 
  25.        provide you with them.

  28. 1. When using a DOS shell to run software that will use the ILLUMINATOR-16
  29.    on a 386 machine, make sure that the ILLUMINATOR frame buffer does not 
  30.    conflict with the Expanded Memory simulated by WINDOWS 3.1. The best
  31.    way to avoid a conflict is to inform WINDOWS to exclude the memory 
  32.    area of the ILLUMINATOR frame buffer. To do this you will need to edit
  33.    your system.ini file (this file is located in your WINDOWS directory).
  34.         Assuming that your frame buffer is a two 32K buffer starting at
  35.    D000 hex, your frame buffer then covers the memory address range from 
  36.    D000 to DFFF hex. Find the section named [386Enh] and on the following
  37.    line add 
  38.                 EMMExclude=D000-DFFF
  39.  
  40.         You can use notepad from WINDOWS or SYSEDIT to do these 
  41.    modifications.

  43. 2. When using a DOS shell to run ILUMINIT.EXE, you may get the "OUT OF 
  44.    ENVIRONMENT SPACE IN COMMAND.COM" error message. This message means that 
  45.    you will need to change the COMMAND LINE entry for invoking your DOS shell
  46.    from WINDOWS 3.1. Follow the steps below:

  48.    1. Quit ILUMINIT without saving your changes.
  49.  
  50.    2. Quit your DOS shell and go back to WINDOWS.
  51.  
  52.    3. Select but do not activate the DOS Shell icon (by clicking on it once).

  57.    4. Select the PROPERTIES menu option in the FILE menu.
  58.  
  59.    5. Change the entry for "COMMAND LINE:"  from  "COMMAND.COM"  to 
  60.       "COMMAND.COM /e:XXXX". The "XXXX" value is the amount of space required 
  61.       for your environment. This should be at least the amount specified in 
  62.       your CONFIG.SYS file.
  63.  
  64.       For example: COMMAND.COM /e:1024  (this gives 1024 bytes of environment)
  65.  
  66. 3. There is no longer a restriction on the Operational Mode of the ILLUMINATOR 
  67.    before calling WINDOWS 3.1. The ILLUMINATOR can be in Targa or Illuminator 
  68.    Operational Mode. The driver will automatically switch to the Illuminator 
  69.    Mode while in WINDOWS.

  71.    The Operational Mode of the board at the time WINDOWS 3.1 is invoked is 
  72.    remembered by the driver and is restored when invoking a DOS shell 
  73.    or when you quit WINDOWS 3.1. This means that you can have your board 
  74.    in "Targa Operational Mode" and call WINDOWS 3.1. Then if you run a DOS 
  75.    shell, the board switches back to "Targa Operational Mode". When you quit 
  76.    WINDOWS 3.1, the board returns to "Targa Operational Mode".

  78. 4. While in a DOS shell, you may use ILUMINIT.EXE to change the Operational 
  79.    Mode of the ILLUMINATOR. If you do, please note that the Operational Mode of 
  80.    all DOS shells will be affected. Furthermore, note that when you quit 
  81.    WINDOWS 3.1, the Operational Mode will also be changed to that set using 
  82.    ILUMINIT.EXE.

  84. 5. You cannot switch between DOS shells that require different Operational
  85.    Modes. Refer to Item 4 above.
  86.  
  87. 6. If you run software that attempts to open live windows on your screen,
  88.    make sure that the interrupts of the ILLUMINATOR are enabled in your 
  89.    system. Failure to do so may result in the application not running or 
  90.    your system hanging. ALSO NOTE THAT THESE APPLICATIONS CANNOT RUN WITH
  91.    THE 1024x768 DRIVER.

  93. 7. Version 2.2 of the driver was modified to handle all versions of the
  94.    ILLUMINATOR-16 hardware with release 1.6.0.3 of the UTILITIES, or later.
  95.    In particular the ILLUMINATOR-16 A is fully supported by this new release.

  97. 8. Version 2.2 of the driver was updated to fix some minor BUGS that were
  98.    found in the original driver examples from Microsoft. 
  99.  
  100. 9. This release 2.3 was updated to be installable under WINDOWS 3.1, it will
  101.    however not run under WINDOWS 3.0 anymore. Call your representative if
  102.    you require a WINDOWS 3.0 version.
