+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
ILLUMINATOR-16 DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 3.1
Rev. 2.30
Jul 21, 1992
Manual #: 10287-RN
+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+

This document contains important release notes for Version 2.3
of the ILLUMINATOR-16 driver for WINDOWS 3.1.

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
IMPORTANT
---------
You must have Version 1.6.0.3 or a later version of the
ILLUMINATOR-16 Utility diskettes to install the ILLUMINATOR
driver (don't forget to reboot your machine after you've
updated your system with these diskettes!). The Utility
diskettes should be included with this package, but if they're
not, contact your Matrox representative and he or she will
provide you with them.
1. When using a DOS shell to run software that will use the ILLUMINATOR-16
on a 386 machine, make sure that the ILLUMINATOR frame buffer does not
conflict with the Expanded Memory simulated by WINDOWS 3.1. The best
way to avoid a conflict is to inform WINDOWS to exclude the memory
area of the ILLUMINATOR frame buffer. To do this you will need to edit
your system.ini file (this file is located in your WINDOWS directory).
Assuming that your frame buffer is a two 32K buffer starting at
D000 hex, your frame buffer then covers the memory address range from
D000 to DFFF hex. Find the section named [386Enh] and on the following
line add
EMMExclude=D000-DFFF
You can use notepad from WINDOWS or SYSEDIT to do these
modifications.
2. When using a DOS shell to run ILUMINIT.EXE, you may get the "OUT OF
ENVIRONMENT SPACE IN COMMAND.COM" error message. This message means that
you will need to change the COMMAND LINE entry for invoking your DOS shell
from WINDOWS 3.1. Follow the steps below:
1. Quit ILUMINIT without saving your changes.
2. Quit your DOS shell and go back to WINDOWS.
3. Select but do not activate the DOS Shell icon (by clicking on it once).
4. Select the PROPERTIES menu option in the FILE menu.
5. Change the entry for "COMMAND LINE:" from "COMMAND.COM" to
"COMMAND.COM /e:XXXX". The "XXXX" value is the amount of space required
for your environment. This should be at least the amount specified in
your CONFIG.SYS file.
For example: COMMAND.COM /e:1024 (this gives 1024 bytes of environment)
3. There is no longer a restriction on the Operational Mode of the ILLUMINATOR
before calling WINDOWS 3.1. The ILLUMINATOR can be in Targa or Illuminator
Operational Mode. The driver will automatically switch to the Illuminator
Mode while in WINDOWS.
The Operational Mode of the board at the time WINDOWS 3.1 is invoked is
remembered by the driver and is restored when invoking a DOS shell
or when you quit WINDOWS 3.1. This means that you can have your board
in "Targa Operational Mode" and call WINDOWS 3.1. Then if you run a DOS
shell, the board switches back to "Targa Operational Mode". When you quit
WINDOWS 3.1, the board returns to "Targa Operational Mode".
4. While in a DOS shell, you may use ILUMINIT.EXE to change the Operational
Mode of the ILLUMINATOR. If you do, please note that the Operational Mode of
all DOS shells will be affected. Furthermore, note that when you quit
WINDOWS 3.1, the Operational Mode will also be changed to that set using
ILUMINIT.EXE.
5. You cannot switch between DOS shells that require different Operational
Modes. Refer to Item 4 above.
6. If you run software that attempts to open live windows on your screen,
make sure that the interrupts of the ILLUMINATOR are enabled in your
system. Failure to do so may result in the application not running or
your system hanging. ALSO NOTE THAT THESE APPLICATIONS CANNOT RUN WITH
THE 1024x768 DRIVER.
7. Version 2.2 of the driver was modified to handle all versions of the
ILLUMINATOR-16 hardware with release 1.6.0.3 of the UTILITIES, or later.
In particular the ILLUMINATOR-16 A is fully supported by this new release.
8. Version 2.2 of the driver was updated to fix some minor BUGS that were
found in the original driver examples from Microsoft.
9. This release 2.3 was updated to be installable under WINDOWS 3.1, it will
however not run under WINDOWS 3.0 anymore. Call your representative if
you require a WINDOWS 3.0 version.
